Carrot seed oil (cold-pressed): SAP value and fatty acids

Carrot seed oil (cold-pressed) has a saponification value of 191 mg KOH/g. One gram needs 0.136 g of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) for bar soap or 0.191 g of potassium hydroxide (KOH) for liquid soap to turn fully into soap, before any superfat.

Key numbers

SAP, NaOH
0.136161 g per g oil
SAP, KOH
0.191 g per g oil
Saponification value
191 mg KOH/g
INCI name
Daucus Carota Sativa Seed Oil

Example: 100 g of Carrot seed oil (cold-pressed) with no superfat needs 13.6 g of 100% NaOH, or 19.1 g of 100% KOH. A 5% superfat uses 5% less.

In soap

Carrot seed oil (cold-pressed) is left out of the soap-quality scores in Soap Ledger: it is mostly not ordinary oil (a wax, resin, blend or an oil with unusual fatty acids), so those scores would not describe it. It still counts fully in the lye calculation.

Still no measured SAP from a cold-pressed carrot seed oil was found; 191 is backed by the oil's fatty-acid makeup (it is mostly petroselinic acid, a C18 like oleic). Many 'carrot oils' are carrot or beta-carotene in sunflower oil (one supplier COA lists only sunflower oil as the INCI): for those, use sunflower's SAP. Carrot seed essential oil is a different product and should not be soaped as an oil.

SAP value: 191 mg KOH/g (Theoretical value from two independent published fatty-acid profiles (191.2 and 192.4) agrees with the only supplier figure (The Soapery, 191). The one lab measurement (143.6, solvent extract with essential oil and 14% unknowns) is rejected as unrepresentative.), from What are SAP Values in Soap Making? (SAP table), The Soapery (UK soap supplier). Printed value: 191 mg KOH/g.

NaOH and KOH values are converted from mg KOH/g with the molar masses 39.997 and 56.106 and rounded to 6 decimals, exactly as in the Soap Ledger app. Real oils vary by origin, grade and lot: check your supplier's certificate of analysis. Verify every weight before you make this, and follow lye safety. Not a safety or compliance certification.
